A Supernumerary Fellow at Harris Manchester College recently delivered a lecture at Harvard University on the subject of Egyptian artists.
Dr Hana Navratilova, whose teaching and research focuses on Egyptian history and archaeology, was asked by the prestigious Ivy League institution’s Museum of the Ancient Near East to talk about the work of Egyptologist Jaroslav Černý. Her talk, which was entitled “The Daily Lives of Ancient Egyptian Artists”, explored Černý’s research at Deir el-Medina on its community of artisans, as well as his groundbreaking studies of texts, artifacts, and the Western Theban landscape.
Dr Navratilova, who was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2023, commented: "‘It was a great honour and a pleasure to talk to an engaged audience at the Harvard Museums of Science and Culture, and specifically to talk about Černý, a transnational networker who lived in divisive times. The message of his scholarship was that of excellence, but also of teamwork and kindness – the message embodied by Harvard Egyptology today."
