The Manchester Lecture 2025: Rabindranath Tagore in Oxford

Monday 12 May, 5.15pm

Join us for our annual Manchester Lecture, this year delivered by Professor Santanu Das, Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford.

Professor Das, whose work focuses on early twentieth-century literature and culture, will be speaking about Nobel prize winning poet, songwriter, philosopher and educationalist Rabindranath Tagore. The lecture will take place the week following Rabindra Jayanti, the annual cultural festival in remembrance of Tagore.

Tagore's links to Harris Manchester College stem from his relationship with former Principal Joseph Estlin Carpenter – a scholar of Sanskrit and Eastern religions – with whom he began a correspondence in 1913. He subsequently visited the College twice, delivering the Hibbert lecture on his second visit in 1930.

This year’s Manchester Lecture will be the first in our newly renovated chapel. The event is free and open to all.
