Professor Finnian M Moore Gerety


Finnian M. Moore Gerety, appointed as Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, is a historian of Asian religions. His research focuses on the intersection of Sanskrit texts and Hindu ritual in early India, especially the sacred utterances and chants known as mantras. Finn is co-Principal Investigator for “Mantras in Religion, Media and Society in Global Southern Asia” (MANTRAMS), a research collaboration with the University of Vienna and the University of Tübingen, funded by a Synergy Grant from the European Research Council. His current book project for Oxford University Press, All This is OM: Mantra, Yoga, and the History of the Sacred Syllable in Early India, is the first-ever scholarly monograph on OM, the preeminent mantra and ubiquitous sacred syllable of Indian religions.
